After 17 years of leading marketing teams in the wild world of Enterprise and SaaS, I've seen it all. From scrappy 4-person squads to bustling 20-member marketing armies, I've been there, done that, and got the branded t-shirt.
In my quest for marketing superheroes, I've scoured the talent pools of India, Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia.
But here's the kicker: finding these gems was tougher than climbing a mountain barefoot. Small to mid-sized SaaS startups with solo recruiters were devoting more time to searching for engineering talent, leaving growth roles—which are just as critical—overlooked. I once waited so long for a content marketer, I thought I'd grow a beard before finding one (spoiler alert: I did).
While LinkedIn proved to be a valuable platform for job postings, the reality of finding suitable candidates was far more challenging. The process of reviewing profiles became an overwhelmingly time-consuming task, often taking up 50% of my time.
The consequences of these prolonged hiring cycles were significant. When critical marketing roles take anywhere from 3 to 6 months to fill, growth goals take a big hit.
During my tenure at IBM a decade back, I witnessed an impressive transformation. Our marketing team in India grew at an unprecedented rate, eventually becoming IBM's second-largest marketing hub worldwide. This experience was eye-opening, showcasing how large enterprises could leverage global talent to drive growth while optimizing costs.
During my tenure at various startups, I started researching solutions for my own hiring needs. I discovered several companies facilitating offshore talent acquisition but they were primarily focused on virtual assistants from the Philippines. If such a SaaS-focused talent service existed, I'd have been first in line, waving my credit card like a fan at a rock concert.
